Restart of Bay Area's Informal Carpool Program Post Pandemic Shutdown
Casual Carpool Makes a Comeback in the San Francisco Bay Area
After a hiatus, the unique commuting tradition known as Casual Carpool is set to relaunch on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. This carpool system, which allows drivers to pick up passengers to share rides into the city, was originally designed to bypass traffic and reduce commuting costs.
The main organizer, Camille Bermudez, is determined to bring back this tradition that has been a part of Bay Area commuting culture since the late 20th century. Bermudez, who had her first experience with Casual Carpool as a teenager, believes that it would benefit people due to its ease, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness.
Drivers are encouraged to contribute monetarily to help cover toll expenses. To qualify for discounted tolls, drivers can pick up the first two people in line. As the tradition grows, it plans to expand to more than 20 locations, starting with Grand Lake, Sacramento Street, and 64th and Christie Avenue in Emeryville. The goal is to have all 20 locations operational by August 2026.
One of the unique aspects of Casual Carpool is the sense of community it fosters among commuters. Many people have made friends or even significant relationships through this tradition. A couple who met through Casual Carpool are still together, and Bermudez herself has made connections, including meeting an alumnus from her high school.
Bermudez started reaching out to people online to gauge interest in the idea on June 8 and found a location in the Grand Lake neighborhood was where people most wanted to use the service. More information can be found at SF Casual Carpool.
As more companies are requiring people to return to the office, Bermudez feels that Casual Carpool is a timely solution to the increased commuting needs. With its relaunch, Casual Carpool will run Monday-Friday during carpool hours, from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Passengers will be dropped off at the 400 block of Howard Street in San Francisco.
The relaunch of Casual Carpool is a testament to the renewed interest in shared, sustainable commuting options. If you're looking for a cost-effective and sociable way to commute, consider joining Casual Carpool.
