Respect for People Key to Lean Environments, Say Podcast Hosts

Dr. Mohamed Saleh and John Dyer, co-hosts of 'Behind the Curtain: Adventures in Continuous Improvement', recently discussed the importance of 'respect for people' in team-based continuous improvement environments, such as lean. They delved into the limitations of salary as a motivator and the need to revisit leadership promotion criteria.

Saleh shared insights from a conversation with a former Toyota employee, highlighting the respect shown by Taiichi Ohno, Eiji Toyoda, and Shoichiro Toyoda towards their people. Respect, they agreed, involves creating win-win scenarios, with no hidden agendas or manipulation. It also entails leaders demonstrating ideal behaviours like listening, empathy, and volunteering discretionary effort.

They touched on the downside of multitasking in continuous improvement environments and stressed the importance of leaders investing in their employees' growth, even if it causes temporary anxiety. Saleh and Dyer also explored the need to reassess the criteria used to promote leaders, ensuring respect for people remains a key factor.
