Dubai to Launch Dubai Metro Blue Line in 2029, Boosting Urban Mobility for Over One Million Residents

Dubai, United Arab Emirates — The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has unveiled plans for the Dubai Metro Blue Line, set to launch in 2029. This expansion project aims to strengthen Dubai's integrated metro network, promote sustainable development, and enhance urban mobility.

Slated for a September 2029 opening, the Blue Line will span approximately 30 kilometers and link major residential and commercial areas. With a passenger capacity of nearly one million individuals, the Blue Line is poised to serve as a vital transportation artery for Dubai's burgeoning population.

Construction of the Dh20.5 billion project was granted to a consortium of premier Turkish and Chinese firms, MAPA, LIMAK, and CRRC, following an extensive international tender process.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of Board of Executive Directors at the RTA, shared, "The Blue Line signifies a significant milestone in Dubai's journey towards becoming a world-class city. It builds upon the success of the Dubai Metro, which has transported over 2.5 billion passengers since its inception in 2009, cementing its position as the backbone of Dubai's public transport system."

The Blue Line will consist of two main routes, seamlessly integrating with both the Red and Green Line networks. One route will extend from Al Khor (on the Green Line) to Academic City via Dubai Festival City, Ras Al Khor, International City (1, 2, and 3), Dubai Silicon Oasis, and Dubai Academic City, before terminating at Al Ruwaiyah 3 Depot. The second route will connect Centrepoint (on the Red Line) to International City (1), then merge with Route 1.

The Blue Line will introduce a number of signature elements, including a 1.3-kilometer bridge over Dubai Creek, the first of its kind for the Metro. Noteworthy station designs include Dubai Creek Harbour, designed by world-renowned SOM architectural firm, and International City (1), the network's largest underground interchange, spanning over 44,000 square meters.

By reducing traffic congestion by 20%, enhancing property values, and generating Dh56.5 billion in economic and environmental returns by 2040, the Blue Line is set to transform the cityscape of Dubai.

When completed, Dubai's train system, encompassing both metro and tram, will span 131 kilometers, making Dubai the home of the world's longest driverless metro network. A dedicated train depot will also be constructed in Al Ruwaiyah 3 to support operations and maintenance.

  1. The Dubai Metro Blue Line, a vital transportation artery, is expected to boost real estate values and generate significant economic and environmental returns in the finance industry.
  2. Slated for 2029, the Blue Line's construction by a consortium of premier international firms highlights Dubai's commitment to the transportation industry and its position as a global hub.
