Rosstat's latest report reveals a slap in the face for the Russian auto industry, with a staggering 18.5% decrease in passenger car production in May 2025 compared to the same period in 2024 - and a 32% drop in truck production according to Interfax. That's roughly 35,000 fewer passenger cars and 8,900 fewer trucks rolling off the assembly lines in May.

However, things aren't all gloom and doom. In the first five months of the year, Russia managed to pump out 281,000 passenger cars (+4% year-over-year), and 58,500 trucks (-20.1% year-over-year).

But it's not just passenger cars and trucks hit hard. The production of automotive bodies plummeted by 56.7% year-over-year in May. Buses with a weight over 5 tons saw a 36.9% drop in May.

While it seems like it's all downhill, there's a silver lining. DK.RU reported that 506,500 cars aged up to three years were sold in Russia during the first five months of 2025 - albeit a 28% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.

To help spur demand, the Ministry of Industry and Trade introduced an expansion of the subsidized auto loan program for families with two or more children in May 2025. Under the new conditions, families with kids can snag a 10% discount on the car price. Anton Alikhanov, the Minister of Industry and Trade, is hopeful that these measures will work like a charm and produce a positive effect.

As for the future, there's a lot of uncertainty. Many Russians remain doubtful about the return of foreign cars to the Russian market. And with the market filled with challenge and mixed signals, it's looking less and less likely that 2025 will match the record car sales of 2024.
