Redefining Schinkelplatz: A New Leaf
In the heart of Berlin's historic centre, a new balance has been struck with the completion of a new building complex, designed by architect David Chipperfield, which is now home to an additional branch of the Bertelsmann Foundation, located directly adjacent to the historic Friedrichswerdersche Church. The church, a cultural landmark, has suffered damage during recent years due to construction works, but the responsible construction companies have repaired the masonry damage, making the church accessible to the public once again.
The new Bertelsmann Foundation building is just a few meters behind the already existing Bertelsmann representation in the Alte Stadtkommandantur (Unter den Linden 1), sparking many discussions and adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the area.
Between Unter den Linden and Werderscher Markt Street, several buildings with different usage concepts have been created, including fourteen exclusive apartments developed in two houses, adjacent to the new building complex, in Niederlag Street, a side street of Unter den Linden and the French Street. These apartments are among the most exclusive offers currently available on the capital's housing market, with approximately half of them already sold. The marketing of the owner-occupied apartments is handled by the FRANKONIA Eurobau AG.
The completion of the Humboldt Forum this year will further increase the attractiveness of the location. This world-class museum complex, nearing completion, is expected to draw visitors from around the globe, adding to the allure of the area.
Moreover, the rebuilding of the former Schinkelsche Bauakademie, on an adjacent plot, will enhance the location even more. Rafael Mondeo, famous for his work on the extension of the Prado Museum in Madrid, was the architect behind the creation of the new building complex.
The revitalisation of this historic area continues to unfold, offering a blend of traditional and modern architecture, and a vibrant mix of cultural and residential spaces.
