Rama II Road Construction Bolsters Safety Measures, Awaits Final Approval for Enhanced Accountability
Safety measures have been bolstered on Rama II Road construction, with contractors adapting practices to minimise risks while keeping schedules on track. The Ministry of Transport has previously stepped in to address unsafe practices, leading to significant improvements.
The Department of Highways (DoH) Director-General Piyapong Jiwatanakulpaisan has prioritised safety across all projects, with a particular focus on Rama II Road. Two key legal steps are required to fully implement the contractor accountability system: a ministerial regulation on contractor qualifications and revisions to regulations on construction and contractor evaluations.
The 'contractor report card' system, a crucial part of this accountability, is still awaiting final approval from the new finance minister. Once approved, the Comptroller General's Department will oversee its implementation. Currently, the project steering committee or designated senior management authority is responsible for the final approval of the 'Contractor Performance Reporting' system.
The cabinet has approved a ministerial regulation to enhance contractor accountability, but it requires the finance minister's signature to take effect. With safety being a top priority, the DoH continues to work towards implementing robust measures to ensure safe and efficient construction on Rama II Road.
