Rajasthan Launches 500MW/2,000MWh BESS Project for Grid Stability
The Rajasthan government has invited tenders for a significant standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) project, marking a shift in India's energy storage landscape. The 500MW/2,000MWh project, with a four-hour single-cycle configuration, is set to boost the state's energy storage capacity and align with local demand patterns.
The tender, opened by Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam, comes after the Indian government amended its BESS implementation guidelines under the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme. The revised norms allow states to tailor projects to their specific grid and peak demand conditions, aiding smoother integration.
Rajasthan's decision to opt for a four-hour configuration addresses past challenges faced with a two-hour setup. The longer cycle enables better alignment with the state's demand curve, ensuring energy is available when needed most. This project is part of Rajasthan's broader energy storage roadmap, which includes an existing 6,000MWh capacity under various stages of implementation.
The Energy Storage Summit India, scheduled for 31 October and 1 November 2025 in Greater Noida, will provide a platform to discuss such developments and the future of energy storage in India.
The 500MW/2,000MWh BESS project in Rajasthan, with its tailored four-hour configuration, is set to enhance the state's energy storage capabilities and improve grid stability. As the tender process unfolds, the project is expected to accelerate the deployment of energy storage solutions, aligning with India's evolving energy landscape.
