A14 Northern Extension: Planned Opening of Lüderitz-Stendal Section This Year
Railway progress underway from A14 to Stendal, with plans for opening set in 2021.
The scheduled opening of the A14 Northern Extension's Lüderitz-Stendal section is set for this year. Steffen Kauert, Autobahn GmbH's head in Magdeburg, confirmed this during a site visit in Döbbelin, where the Autobahn is expected to be extended to the Stendaler bypass road B188 by the year's end.
Bernd-Volker Brahms, our Sachsen-Anhalt-based journalist, reports that construction progress is being made on the route section towards Osterburg, with the Seehausen and Wittenberge sections already complete. Kauert expressed confidence that these planned milestones will be met despite some remaining challenges in earthworks and subsoil settlements.
The site visit also showcased the ongoing construction of a PWC facility for trucks, with unmanned parking spaces planned in both directions. Infrastructure Minister Lydia Hüskens (FDP) expressed optimism about the swift continuation of construction following the recent infrastructure package.
Despite the progress, there were earlier concerns about construction delays due to budget and funding uncertainty. However, Hüskens stated that, based on information from Berlin, funding seems secure. The completion of the Lüderitz-Stendal section would mark another significant step towards finishing the A14 Northern Extension, which stretches for 97 kilometers through Saxony-Anhalt and consists of eight construction sections, as of December 2024.
- The infrastructure package is expected to accelerate the construction on the A14 Northern Extension, particularly in the transportation sector.
- The PWC facility for trucks along the A14 Northern Extension, provisioning unmanned parking spaces in both directions, is zoned to bolster the finance industry by facilitating smoother flow of goods and services within the region, and parallelly, boost the local industry.
