Rail Travel Passengers Suggest New Candidate for Railroad Administrator Role

The German Railway, a company serving approximately 7 million customers daily, is on the brink of change. The federal chairman of the passenger association Pro Bahn, Lukas Iffländer, has proposed Anna-Theresa Korbutt as a potential successor to the current CEO, Richard Lutz.

Korbutt, the managing director of Hamburg's public transport authority, has garnered support for her candidacy. Pro Bahn believes that the new CEO should have a background in the transportation sector and a comprehensive understanding of Germany's railway system. They also stress the importance of a fresh perspective, suggesting that the new leader should not be someone who has been entrenched within the railway corporation for an extended period.

Iffländer underscores the need for a competent team around the new CEO to dismantle entrenched structures and empower those who can implement progressive changes within the organization. Korbutt, who is currently the managing director of the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV), has shown leadership and team-building skills in her role.

In a recent LinkedIn post, Korbutt expressed her gratitude for the high level of appreciation, stating, "Thank you for this high level of appreciation, it really honors me."

The current CEO, Richard Lutz, will remain in office until the succession is regulated. Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder announced Lutz's premature termination of contract on Thursday and plans to clarify the question of the successor by September 22.

Iffländer welcomes the early departure of Lutz as a necessary signal for a break with previous approaches. He warns that replacing only the top head won't bring much change and that it needs people who can clean up the company and ensure that those who block progress no longer have power.

The employees of the German Railway and their partners achieve a great performance every day under difficult conditions. However, innovative approaches in the company can often get lost or blocked, according to Iffländer. The personnel change at the top of the railway will have little short-term impact on the operational and financial crisis of the company, he adds.

Schneider's new strategy for the railway system is yet to be announced. Regardless, the suggestion of Anna-Theresa Korbutt as a successor to rail chief Richard Lutz has been met with a positive reaction from the German Railway. Korbutt has taken clear positions, for example, in the debate on the financing of the Germany ticket, demonstrating her commitment to finding solutions for the railway's challenges.
