Bending Spoons, infamous for slashing workforces in the companies they take over, bought WeTransfer last year and axed 75% of its employees. In 2023, they nabbed Evernote and immediately made all staff redundant, merging the operations with their own teams.
Rumor has it that Komoot's 150 employees are bracing for 'big cuts' following the takeover. This leaves fans of Komoot's extensive mapping services worried about the impact on the user experience.
There are also fears that Komoot might pull sponsorship for major adventure sports events like the Komoot Women's Rally Series and the Le Pilgrimage trail running and mountain biking events.
In a press release, Komoot's CEO and co-founder, Markus Hallermann, insisted that new ownership will benefit the Komoot community. He believes that Bending Spoons, with its expertise in innovation and scaling platforms, is the right partner to lead Komoot into the future.
Not too long ago, Komoot decided to extend its paywall and limit services for non-subscribers. New users now need a $59.99 annual subscription to sync routes to GPS watches and trackers.
Komoot isn't all behind a paywall yet. You can test out its features in a free region. After that, you can buy regions a la carte, bundle them, or shell out for global offline maps.
As a Komoot Premium member, you'll now need to sync maps to your GPS devices. The premium subscription also includes sport-specific maps and up-to-date weather information.
