Indonesia is set to make a significant leap in its commitment to sustainable energy with the launch of the Indonesia Battery Integration Project (IBIP). This ambitious $5.9 to $6 billion initiative aims to establish a fully integrated electric vehicle (EV) battery industry ecosystem across the archipelago.

The project, spanning over 2,000 hectares, will be divided between the Karawang New Industry City (KNIC) in Indonesia's West Java Province and the FHT Industrial Park of East Halmahera, North Maluku Province. These locations have been designated as national strategic projects.

Key components of the IBIP include a battery manufacturing plant in Karawang, a nickel mining and processing operation in East Halmahera, and a battery recycling facility. The Karawang plant, with an initial annual production capacity of 6.9 gigawatt-hours (GWh), will leverage advanced manufacturing technologies to produce high-quality battery cells and modules.

In East Halmahera, the project will produce approximately 142,000 tons of nickel and 30,000 tons of cathode materials annually. The battery recycling facility, designed to process around 20,000 tons of recycled batteries per year, will utilize state-of-the-art technologies to achieve a metal recovery rate of over 95%.

The project is expected to create around 8,000 direct jobs and 35,000 indirect job opportunities, with the development of 18 supporting infrastructure projects, including a multifunctional port.

The IBIP is led by a consortium consisting of Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), state-owned mining company PT Aneka Tambang (ANTAM), and Chinese battery firms including CATL, Brunp, and Lygend. The Indonesian government's strong commitment to the initiative is reflected in the ownership of IBC by major Indonesian state enterprises, including the national electricity company PLN and oil and gas company Pertamina.

The project aligns with Indonesia's 2060 carbon neutrality target by developing a green, circular battery industry, utilizing the country's large nickel reserves to produce batteries domestically, and promoting electric mobility and energy transition. The project sets a benchmark for sustainable industrial development in Southeast Asia through vertical integration of the entire battery value chain, enhancing energy independence and lowering carbon emissions.

President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, declared the project a demonstration of Indonesia's dedication to promoting sustainable energy. The IBIP is poised to significantly contribute to Indonesia's carbon neutrality goals, while also accelerating economic development and the transition to clean energy.
