New Zealand Unveils Hydrogen-Powered Truck in Emissions-Reduction Push

New Zealand is set to revolutionise its heavy freight transport with the development of a hydrogen-powered truck. This innovative project, valued in the million range, involves Pure Hydrogen Corporation, its subsidiary Pure One Operations Pty Ltd, and Hydrogen Diesel Electric Australia (HDEA). Toyota New Zealand, TR Group, and Global Bus Ventures are also key players in this groundbreaking initiative, which is part of a government-supported program with investments in the tens of millions.

The truck, a retrofitted DAF CF 530, is powered by two Toyota 85kW fuel cells, totalling 170kW, along with a 124kWh battery system and 52kg of onboard hydrogen storage. Toyota New Zealand, led by CEO Tatsuya Ishikawa, is committed to carbon neutrality and has previously introduced the Toyota Mirai FCEV and the Emirates Team New Zealand 'Chase Zero' hydrogen-powered foiling chase boat. The truck operates similarly to a conventional diesel truck, with comparable refuelling times and a range of 500km.

TR Group, in partnership with Hiringa Energy, will offer 20 hydrogen-powered trucks via a fully maintained operating lease. This includes four Hyundai Xcient FCEV rigid chassis trucks and 16 6x4 'tractor units' supplied by Global Bus Ventures. Additionally, two Toyota Mirai are currently being shared by eight corporate organisations, with plans to add 18 more to a commercial fleet leasing scheme.

The development of this hydrogen-powered truck marks a significant step towards sustainable heavy freight transport in New Zealand. Toyota New Zealand's involvement, along with other key players, demonstrates a collective commitment to reducing emissions and promoting hydrogen as a viable energy source. The government's support, with investments in the tens of millions, underscores the importance of this initiative.
