New CEO announced at Melting Pot after lengthy vacancy

The Melting Pot, the popular Tampa-based fondue restaurant chain, has announced a series of changes in its leadership team as it marks its 50th anniversary this year. Notably, John "JC" Crawford has been named as the new CEO, succeeding longtime leader Bob Johnston, who will remain the owner and chairman of the board.

Crawford, who joined The Melting Pot as Executive Vice President of Operations in March 2020, brings extensive experience in the full-service restaurant sector to his new role. Prior to joining The Melting Pot, he held leadership positions at Ruth's Chris Steak House and Bennigan's, where he was responsible for franchising and operations. Early in his career, Crawford honed his skills as an assistant general manager at McDonald's for five years.

Dan Stone, who has been with The Melting Pot for over two decades, has also taken on a new role within the company. His title has changed from Chief Operating and Development Officer to Chief Business Officer. Meanwhile, Mike Mobley has been promoted to Chief Talent Officer, and Ana Malmqvist's title has changed from Chief Marketing Officer to Chief Brand Officer. Randy Barnett has also been promoted to Chief Technology Officer.

Matt Zurcher has been promoted from Director to Vice President of Franchise and Restaurant Operations. These promotions and changes in roles reflect The Melting Pot's commitment to fostering growth and development within its team.

Johnston, who has been the "chief excitement officer" of The Melting Pot since 1974, began working at the restaurant as a dishwasher at the age of 14. Along with his brothers, he bought and grew The Melting Pot into a national franchise. Johnston was also CEO of its parent company, Front Burner Brands, from 1985 until October 2021.

The Melting Pot chain offers coursed meals featuring cheese and chocolate fondue, as well as entrees of meat and fish cooked in broth at the table. Last year, systemwide sales for the chain fell 3.1% according to Technomic Top 500 data. In an effort to spur franchise growth, The Melting Pot has introduced a new incentive program, offering a 50% discount on the initial franchising fee to the first five new-construction franchisee agreements signed starting July 1.

With the new leadership in place, The Melting Pot is poised to continue its legacy as a beloved dining destination while looking towards the future with excitement and ambition. Crawford, in particular, is eager to build on the success of the brand and drive it towards even greater heights. As he takes on his new role, he will work closely with Johnston to ensure a smooth transition and maintain the brand's commitment to quality and innovation.

Crawford, in his new role as CEO, aims to leverage his extensive experience in franchising and restaurant operations to drive The Melting Pot towards further success and greater heights. Dan Stone, now the Chief Business Officer, has been with The Melting Pot for over two decades, demonstrating a long-term commitment to the business.
