In a significant shift in leadership, Munich Re, the world's largest reinsurer, has announced that Dr. Christoph Jurecka will take over as CEO from Dr. Joachim Wenning, effective January 1, 2026. Wenning, who has been at the helm for eight years, will retire at the end of this year for personal reasons and will not seek an extension of his mandate[1][2][3].

Wenning, 60, joined Munich Re in 2009 and has led the company through its Ambition 2025 strategy program. Jurecka, 50, who has been serving as CFO since 2019, has extensive experience in both primary insurance and reinsurance. He joined Munich Re in 2011 and was previously on the Board of Management of ERGO Group AG[1][2][3][4].

Upon Jurecka’s appointment as CEO, Andrew Buchanan will succeed him as CFO, also effective January 1, 2026. The transition period for the leadership change at Munich Re is yet to be detailed[1][2][3][4].

Interestingly, a similar leadership change has occurred at Munich Re's competitor, Hannover Re. Their CFO is also set to become CEO, although further details about the new CEO of Hannover Re have not been disclosed[5].

Wenning's departure from Munich Re and the reasons behind it have not been specified[5]. However, his retirement coincides with the completion of Munich Re’s Ambition 2025 strategy program[1][2][3].

In summary, Dr. Joachim Wenning, the current CEO of Munich Re, will step down at the end of 2025 after eight years leading the company. Dr. Christoph Jurecka, the current CFO, will take over as CEO from January 1, 2026.
