Multiple millions of children receive financial aid, approximately one million
In a significant development, the number of children from low-income families receiving the child supplement in Germany has tripled since January 2021. This surge can primarily be attributed to increased financial support measures and policy adjustments aimed at addressing rising living costs and social inequality, exacerbated by factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and economic pressures.
Family Minister Franziska Giffey has attributed this sharp increase to the consequences of the corona crisis and reforms in the law. Prior to the first reform in June 2019, only 253,929 children were entitled to the child supplement.
The child supplement, which provides additional financial support to families, was reformed in two steps to reach more children. The first reform took place in June 2019. As a result, the number of children benefiting from the child supplement grew from 376,109 in March to 488,081 in April.
In response to the pandemic, the federal government created the "emergency child supplement" with fewer proof requirements in March. This measure further expanded the reach of the child supplement, contributing to the tripling of recipients since January.
As of August, nearly one million children in low-income families are now receiving the child supplement, a significant increase from the 299,168 children who were receiving it in January. Family Minister Giffey has hailed this as a great success, stating that it's a positive development that three times as many families as at the beginning of the year are now receiving the monthly supplement to child benefit.
These welfare policies and increased child supplement allocations are designed to reduce poverty among low-income families and support children's health and well-being in response to economic challenges since early 2021. The aim is to improve health and social outcomes for children under five years old and low-income families, enhancing financial risk protection in these vulnerable groups.

Other businesses, especially those involved in social services, have reported a surge in demand due to the increased need for support among low-income families. The growth in the number of recipients of the child supplement, a significant financial aid for families, has attracted attention from other finance sectors, opening new opportunities for collaboration and mutual benefit.
