Steppin' Away to Explore: Vacation Saves the Day as Top Priority for Germans
- *
Leisure travel is typically the preferred choice for people to take a break. - Most frequently opted savings for intended vacation spending
Folks in Germany highly value that sweet vacay vibe. Turns out, 42% of a whopping 2,000 online shoppers admit they stash away their hard-earned cash for travel adventures – that's more than any other life aspect, as revealed by a study by the price-comparing platform, Idealo (snag it here: idealo.de). The German Press Agency got an early peek at the findings conducted in May by market research company, Kantar.
Other popular savings choices? building up financial reserves (39%), retirement savings (32%), and splurging on big-ticket items like TVs or bicycles (28%). A sixth of these frugal folks wish they could save more, but just can't seem to make it happen. Two-thirds are worried about making their money stretch, with 42% having to dip into their savings buffet last year.
When the going gets tough, age groups show a bit of a savings dance. The older folk – those fabulous baby boomers beyond 60 – save more on clothes, whereas their younger counterparts in Gen Z (18-30) prefer to scrimp on grub. The baby boomers are more likely to rein in their restaurant and café bills, while the youngsters prioritize fashion as a personal and unique expression (Idealo CEO Mark Dekan's take on that).
Life's a party, but frugality's the name of the game. As prices rise, consumers are still holding tight to their purses. According to the survey, popular cost-cutting choices include clothing and accessories (every second spender), restaurant visits (every second penny-pincher), consumer goods, hobby and leisure items (41%), and electronics (40%).
Cultural and leisure activities like cinema, concerts, and festivals feel the financial pain of this austere mentality, with 46% of respondents admitting to cutting back. Just behind the struggle for entertainment are club and nightlife expenses, while books, media, drugstore and cosmetics, and health and sports facilities bring up the rear.
Idealo's study suggests that consumers have a variety of strategies to save their dough. The most common move? comparative shopping (64% practice this art). The second most popular method is paying more attention to special offers (56%), and a close third are discount coupons (46%).
