Modi inaugurates Bengaluru Metro's Yellow Line, enhancing transportation for approximately 600,000 daily riders
The city of Bengaluru has a new addition to its transport network, as the Yellow Line Metro commenced commercial services on August 11, 2025. This 19.15 km fully elevated corridor, connecting Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road in South Bengaluru to Bommasandra in the east, has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Yellow Line offers numerous benefits and modern features that significantly improve the city's southern transport network. It connects key residential areas with major tech parks and industrial zones such as Electronic City, Bommasandra Industrial Area, Silk Board Junction, and BTM Layout. This linkage is expected to decongest notorious traffic choke points, especially Silk Board Junction, saving considerable travel time and reducing dependence on road traffic congestion.
One of the key features of the Yellow Line is its introduction of driverless metro operations, making it Bengaluru’s first. Trains are equipped with advanced features including CCTV cameras, digital displays, automated fare collection, AI-based track monitoring, and collision-preventing communication systems to ensure enhanced safety and passenger experience.
The Yellow Line interchanges with other metro lines—Green Line at Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road, and upcoming interchanges with Pink and Blue Lines at Jayadeva Hospital and Central Silk Board, offering greater network connectivity. The line also includes infrastructural innovations such as Bengaluru’s first Metro-cum-road double-decker corridor and major interchange stations like Jayadeva, facilitating seamless multimodal transport and easing traffic bottlenecks.
Commercial services started with three trainsets, and plans are to expand to full operations with 15 trainsets by March 2026. The corridor facilitates direct and faster travel between South Bengaluru’s residential neighborhoods and booming employment hubs, notably including companies like Infosys, Biocon, and TCS, thus supporting the city’s economic activities.
The Yellow Line is considered a game-changer for Bengaluru’s southern transport, combining better connectivity, modern technology, and traffic decongestion to transform daily commuting in the city. The Bengaluru Metro Phase-3 project, estimated at over Rs15,610 crore, aims to transform urban mobility, reduce congestion, and fuel economic growth, serving millions of commuters for years to come.
The inauguration event was attended by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Union Ministers Manohar Lal Khattar, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Tejasvi Surya, V. Somanna, D.K. Shivakumar, and C.N. Manjunath. Shivakumar described the inauguration of the Yellow Line as a "new dawn" for Bengaluru's metro system.
Moreover, PM Modi flagged off three Vande Bharat Express trains from Bengaluru's KSR Railway Station, running routes to Belagavi, Amritsar to Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, and Nagpur (Ajni) to Pune. One-way fares will range from Rs10 to Rs90, consistent with the existing Namma Metro pricing.
With the arrival of the Yellow Line, Bengaluru's metro network now extends more than 96 kilometres, cutting peak-hour travel to Electronic City by about half. The line is expected to significantly decongest notorious traffic choke points, especially the Silk Board junction, providing a much-needed relief for the over six lakh daily commuters it caters to.
