Modernization underway for the TAURUS cruise missile

The High-Tech Missile System, TAURUS KEPD-350, Set for an Update

First introduced at the start of the 21st century, the TAURUS KEPD-350, nicknamed MAW, has been a mainstay in the Luftwaffe since 2005 and remains one of the Luftwaffe's most cutting-edge aircraft. To ensure its continued operational effectiveness, plans are underway to modernize the TAURUS inventory of the German Armed Forces, with the first stages scheduled to begin in 2025.

In a bid to jumpstart necessary modernization measures, the procurement office of the German Armed Forces has just signed a framework agreement. This agreement paves the way for what's known as "capability preservation" for the TAURUS KEPD-350.

TAURUS is short for "Target Adaptive Unitary and Dispenser Robotic Ubiquity System." This guided missile, approximately five meters long and weighing a hefty 1,400 kilograms, boasts its own propulsion system and mission planning system. Its primary purpose is to engage strategic targets from a distance, allowing pilots to strike from afar without breaching enemy airspace.

Currently, the TAURUS KEPD-350 is deployable with the combat aircraft Tornado, and preparations are ongoing for its use with the Eurofighter.

If you're curious about the TAURUS KEPD-350, here's a quick summary: Developed by Taurus Systems GmbH, a joint venture between MBDA Deutschland GmbH and Saab Bofors Dynamics, this advanced air-launched cruise missile system features terrain-referenced navigation and a low-altitude flight path, making it a formidable asset for evading radar detection[1][2]. As for the future, Germany is considering bolstering its defense capabilities, potentially including support for Ukraine with long-range missile technology. However, specific modernization plans for the Taurus KEPD-350 haven't been detailed in recent reports[2]. Regarding Eurofighter deployment, no specific timeline has been established[3]. Keep a keen eye on official announcements from the German Ministry of Defense or related agencies for more precise details on these developments.

The modernization of the TAURUS KEPD-350 missile system requires significant investments from the finance sector, given its role in the German defense industry. The aerospace industry is expected to play a crucial part in the updates to the TAURUS KEPD-350, as it will be integrated with the Eurofighter aircraft.
