Mercadona allocates €290 million in recapitalization
Mercadona, the Spanish supermarket chain, has expanded its footprint in Portugal with the opening of a new logistics hub in Almeirim. This state-of-the-art facility, operational since June 27, 2025, is the largest logistics center Mercadona has ever built in Portugal and required an investment of 290 million euros.
Key details of this expansion include:
- **Location and Size**: The center is located in Almeirim, about 100 km from Lisbon, built on a 440,000 square meter area. The constructed space covers approximately 120,000 square meters, including a 49,000 square meter refrigerated warehouse and a 50,000 square meter dry goods warehouse, alongside offices and maintenance facilities.
- **Employment**: The new logistics block will employ approximately 630 people, contributing to job creation in the Ribatejo region.
- **Strategic and Economic Impact**: The center is strategically situated with excellent transport infrastructure connections, improving store supply chain efficiency, quality, and freshness for 63 Mercadona stores currently active in Portugal. The facility complements the existing hub in Póvoa de Varzim and supports Mercadona’s further expansion plans in central-southern Portugal, including upcoming store openings in Lisbon, Setúbal, and Évora.
- **Future Innovations**: An additional 10 million euros investment is planned for process automation in the facility, underscoring Mercadona’s commitment to innovation in logistics.
Portuguese authorities have welcomed the investment as a strong sign of confidence in the country and a positive driver for regional economic development.
