Media House Bayern: Nurturing Media Innovations
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Media Lab Bayern has proven to be a key driver of media innovation in Munich. Over the past decade, the lab has supported over 100 startups, fostering a culture of continuous reinvention and encouraging media entrepreneurs to push the industry forward.
A Decade of Successful Startups
Since 2015, Media Lab Bayern has been supporting media startups at two locations - Munich and Ansbach - with coaching, financing, and a strong network. The lab's efforts have yielded impressive results, with startups acquiring over 30,000 paying customers and raising more than €60 million in venture capital.
Beyond public funding, Media Lab Bayern has helped startups raise an additional €2.5 million from partners such as the Bundeswehr University and the Robert Bosch Foundation. Moreover, an impressive 84% of their startups remain active three years after funding ends, which is about 27% higher than the average for US startups.
The Media Startup Fellowship
Media Lab Bayern's funding design is effective due to a mix of financial support, a safe space for learning, meaningful methods, and close facilitation. The lab offers the Media Startup Fellowship, providing startups with up to €40,000 in non-equity funding.
The fellowship lasts nine months and is divided into three phases: Trial Run (a three-day workshop and pitch selection), Set Up (a two-week workshop focusing on vision, validation, finance, and pitch training), and Build Up (focusing on sales, marketing, networking, and company organization).
A Central Player in Munich's Digital Media Landscape
Media Lab Bayern acts as a hub nurturing innovation by supporting media professionals to develop and implement innovative ideas. With tailored support programs, coaching, access to a broad network, and significant financial backing, it has become a central player in transforming Munich's digital media landscape.
The lab fosters a culture of continuous reinvention and encourages media entrepreneurs to push the industry forward while maintaining healthy skepticism toward progress, thus shaping the future of media in Munich and beyond.
Looking Forward
Media Lab Bayern plans to enter into significantly more partnerships in the future and expand its network throughout Germany. The lab is currently working on new solutions for the Fediverse in joint funding projects with SWR X Lab and Mastodon.
Two of the currently emerging startups that have been supported by Media Lab Bayern are Articlely and So Done. Both startups address pressing challenges such as monetizing journalistic content, reaching young audiences, and dealing with hate speech.
Over 250 jobs have been created through Media Lab Bayern's work. The role of events is central in Media Lab Bayern's work, as they provide a platform for diverse perspectives and exchange. Media Lab Bayern organizes numerous events such as BIPoC meetups, barcamps, and a festival to foster innovation.
Applying for Support
Media Lab Bayern encourages startups working on innovative, digital media products to apply during the current application phase. The lab offers targeted, regular support programs for the industry and provides expertise and space for innovation.
