Breach Exposes Personal Data of Thousands in Sheboygan

In a recent data breach, the City of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, has discovered that the sensitive personal information of 67,947 Americans may have been compromised. The incident occurred on October 31, 2024, as a result of a cyberattack.

The breach potentially involved the theft of names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, drivers' license or state ID numbers, and license plate or vehicle identification numbers. Constangy, Brooks, Smith and Prophete, LLP, the law firm representing the Sheboygan city government, disclosed this information in a filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General.

Following the discovery of the attack, the city took immediate measures to secure its digital environment and engaged a digital forensics and incident response firm to investigate the incident. On May 14, 2025, the city learned that certain individuals' personal information was affected by the breach.

Letters of notification have been sent to those affected, informing them about the data breach and offering free identity protection services to victims whose Social Security numbers were stolen. The city is currently implementing enhanced security protocols to minimize the risk of another data breach.
