Lift of the Barrier

The Elbe River in Dresden, Germany, has been unexpectedly opened for shipping traffic earlier than planned before the city festival. The quicker-than-anticipated completion of necessary clearance and repairs on the river is believed to be the reason for the early reopening.

The work on the Elbe, which includes dredging, sounding, control work, and work on shipping signs, was initially carried out to prepare for the city festival. Karsten Wild, head of the shipping department of the WSA Elbe in Dresden, stated that a sudden increase in commercial shipping is not expected due to the current water levels.

The Elbe was completely closed to ships following the collapse of the Carolabridge in September last year, with only a few controlled passages allowed. However, the closure in the area of the former Carolabridge was lifted at 3 pm on an unspecified day, marking the resumption of shipping traffic.

The current water level in the Elbe stands at 57 centimeters, which is still limiting the economically viable shipping. Despite the low water conditions, the necessary work to restore fairway conditions was accelerated to ensure the river was navigable for shipping traffic for the event.

No recent reports mention continuing disruptions like those caused by WWII bomb finds or major bridge works that could delay the river opening, suggesting smoother operations this time around. The preparations for the city festival likely created incentives to expedite the work to ensure the river was ready for shipping traffic in time for the event.

Work with the dredger continues to keep the fairway clear, and parallel work on dredging, sounding, control work, and work on shipping signs is being conducted. The goal is to open the federal waterway Elbe for shipping traffic in time for the Dresden city festival.
