Leipzig's Finance Mayor Warns of Massive Deficit Due to Transferred Tasks

Leipzig's finance mayor, Torsten Bonew, has revealed a significant budget deficit of 167 million euros for five items, with the actual figure expected to be much higher. The city's budget is under strain due to transferred tasks from federal and state governments, a challenge acknowledged by Bonew.

The Left faction in the Leipzig city council has been investigating the impact of these transferred tasks on the city's budget. They recently asked Bonew about the matter, who agreed to examine the situation from 2013 to the present. However, he warned that this would be a massive task for the departments.

Bonew provided two thick PDF packages containing the relevant data. However, these reports lacked clarity, making it difficult for the Left faction to create a clear table of unfunded tasks. Despite the challenges, Bonew has set an end of October as the target for providing the table.

Both Bonew and Burkhard Jung, the mayor of Leipzig, have expressed interest in seeing a reliable compilation of how federal tasks affect municipal budgets. These tasks, often in the social sector, are not adequately funded, leaving municipalities to pay with their strained budgets.

The investigation into the impact of transferred tasks on Leipzig's budget is ongoing. The city aims to provide a clear table of unfunded tasks by the end of October. Both Bonew and Jung are committed to understanding and addressing the financial strain these tasks place on the city.
