Leading battery manufacturer CATL signs a supply agreement with Vanda RE for battery supplies.
Gurīn Energy and Gentari's Vanda Solar & Battery Project: A Strategic Advancement for Indonesia's Green Economy
Gurīn Energy, a Singapore-based renewable energy developer, and Gentari are making significant strides in the clean energy sector with their joint venture company, Vanda RE. The Vanda Solar & Battery Project, situated in the Riau Islands, Indonesia, is a utility-scale solar-plus-storage development that is set to revolutionise Indonesia's renewable energy landscape.
The project, which boasts 2GWp of installed solar PV capacity and 4.4 GWh of battery storage, has secured a supply agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) for up to 2.2 gigawatt hours (GWh) of CATL's EnerX battery energy storage system (BESS). This agreement marks a significant step in the project's development, following the signing of a 1GW framework supply agreement for solar panels earlier this year and the selection of the Owner's Engineer for the project.
CATL's BESS will be manufactured locally in their factory in Karawang, West Java, supporting Indonesia’s local content requirement (TKDN). This move is expected to boost clean technology manufacturing in the country, strengthening its cleantech industrial base.
The solar power generated (2 GW) and stored power will be exported to Singapore under a green economic corridor agreement between Indonesia and Singapore, enhancing regional clean energy trade and cooperation. This project is part of a broader initiative between the two countries to develop a regional green economic corridor focused on clean energy, encouraging more investments in renewable projects and clean technology in Indonesia.
The 4.4 GWh battery storage capacity is a substantial deployment in the region, enabling grid stability and optimisation of solar generation. This scale will accelerate Indonesia’s energy transition and decarbonization goals.
Manufacturing in Indonesia ensures that local materials and labour are used, creating jobs and helping develop a domestic supply chain for batteries and renewable energy components. This aligns with Gentari's aim to be the leading Commercial and Industrial renewable energy developer, hydrogen producer, and green mobility solutions partner in Asia Pacific.
The Vanda Solar & Battery Project's integration of CATL’s 2.2 GWh battery system represents a strategic advancement for Indonesia’s green economy, strengthening clean technology supply chains, fostering regional green energy collaboration, and supporting domestic renewable energy manufacturing and deployment. This aligns with broader Southeast Asian efforts to enhance renewable energy adoption and develop sustainable energy infrastructure.
