So, what do we got? We got Gwapo money! The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has green-lighted a new initiative known as the Southeast Asia and Pacific Forests Integrated Program. It's all about bolstering the health and connectivity of these Primary Forests (PFs), ensuring they maintain their biodiversity, climate benefits, and vitality for sustainable livelihoods. 🌲✅
The party's organized by two heavyweight and nature-loving giants: the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). They're fetching a total of USD 42.4 million in GEF grants and an additional USD 185 million in co-financing to fund projects in three countries—Laos, Papua New Guinea, and Thailand—and a regional coordination project. Their mission? To protect the region's PFs while managing 3.2 million hectares of protected areas and over 7 million hectares of landscapes, restoring 8,500 hectares of degraded ecosystems, and omitting 34 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions. They're also lookin' to benefit close to 20,000 people through their efforts. 💥💪
Each country will have its projects managed by FAO and UNDP, with the respective Ministries of Agriculture and Forestry, Conservation, and Environment tackling the execution. As for the regional coordination project, it'll be helmed by IUCN and FAO, with partners like CIFOR-ICRAF and Grow Asia on board, aiming to unite nations, share knowledge, and foster coordinated action across borders. 🌐🌍
The inception workshop held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, brought together eight countries: Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. These nations enthusiastically signed onto the program's objectives and hammered out the coordination mechanisms. They identified key outputs the program should prioritize, including a regional vision on primary forests, a primary forest investment forum, and a knowledge and learning hub. 📈
This initiative will back the development of coherent policies, frameworks, and strategies at both national and regional scales, encouraging conservation and the promotion of other effective area-based conservation mechanisms in primary forest landscapes. The regional coordination project will bolster collaboration and south-south cooperation, facilitating knowledge exchange, technical support, and capacity development for enhanced primary forest management across borders. 🤝🌟
Finally, this program is one of five GEF integrated investments for PFs under the GEF-8 replenishment. It'll connect with the GEF-8 Critical Forest Biomes Integrated Programs for the Amazon, Guinean Forests, Mesoamerica, and Congo Basin to drive global systems change in important tropical forest landscapes. 🌞🌏
