Increased Ticket Prices Disappoint Minister Due to Decision by German Federation

The price of the Germany ticket, a pass used by approximately 14 million people in Germany for nationwide travel in regional and local public transport, is set to increase from 58 euros to between 62 and 64 euros per month starting in 2027. This decision was made unanimously by the transport ministers of the states at a special conference held in Munich.

The renewed price increase, effective from January 1, 2026, comes as a result of a financial dispute between the federal government and the states. The negotiations between the two parties were tough, with both unwilling to provide more money, leading to the decision for only a price increase.

The current Minister of Transport for Brandenburg, Detlef Tabbert, criticized the federal government for not contributing more than 1.5 billion euros. Tabbert had hoped that the price of the Germany ticket could remain at 58 euros per month. However, he expressed disappointment at the price increase.

The negotiations centered around offsetting expected additional costs for transport companies. The industry estimates the usage of the Germany ticket, and the price increase does not include any additional financial contribution from the federal government or the states.

The federal finance minister was reportedly unwilling to cover the financing gap, which the states blamed for the pricing problem. This point of contention in the negotiations led to the price adjustment.

In a bid to ease the burden, the price of the Germany ticket was reduced from the proposed 64 euros to at least 63 euros following tough negotiations. Despite this, the price of the Germany ticket will further increase to 63 euros per month in 2026, a rise from the current 49 euros to 58 euros per month at the beginning of the year.

The increase in the price of the Germany ticket is a consequence of the financial dispute between the federal government and the states, a dispute that has been ongoing for some time. The special transport ministers' conference was held in Munich to address this issue and make a decision on the Germany ticket price.
