In a bold move aimed at reinvigorating the domestic copper industry and strengthening national security, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on copper imports, effective from August 1, 2025. The decision, announced via the Truth Social platform, follows a series of letters outlining tariff rates for various product imports.

The tariff, reminiscent of previous measures on steel and aluminium, is part of ongoing trade policies and marks a new development in the ongoing trade policies. Contrary to speculation, these tariffs are not a continuation of the 50% tariffs on copper imports but stand as a separate measure with its own start date and scope.

The tariffs will be imposed on certain sector imports, independent of countries, and apply to products imported into the U.S., not just copper. The move comes amid concerns that the U.S. imports nearly half its copper, mainly from Chile, which is viewed as a vulnerability for supply chains tied to national defense and key industries.

The tariff is intended to reverse the decline of the American copper industry, a sector that Trump has criticised previous U.S. leadership, particularly the Biden administration, for allowing to weaken. Trump terms this part of entering a "golden age" for the industry.

The anticipated tariff has already caused a stir in the copper market, leading to record-high prices. This increase is expected to impact the cost of copper-intensive products, such as electric vehicles, appliances, electronics, and construction materials.

In addition, the tariff is expected to encourage domestic copper production and reduce dependence on imports, particularly from countries like Chile. However, this shift in supply chains may also heighten trade negotiations and affect sectors like housing, appliances, and construction machinery, as Trump has warned other nations, including South Korea and Japan, of potential tariff hikes on their goods.

The administration argues that the 50% copper tariff is necessary for national security and to restore American industrial strength. While the tariff rates for each country are specific to the products being imported, they have not been specified in detail. Trump, however, is optimistic, stating that America will once again build a DOMINANT copper industry.
