Iconic Oxford Bike Shop Beeline Bicycles Closes After 30 Years
After around three decades in business, independent bike shop Beeline Bicycles has closed its doors in Oxford. The company, which began in the 1980s refurbishing and selling second-hand bicycles, faced a combination of rising costs and falling turnover in recent years.
Beeline Bicycles enjoyed its peak in 2012 with sales exceeding £2m. However, turnover began to decline significantly in the following years. Despite initial success during the pandemic, with turnover reaching £1.53m in 2022, the business struggled to maintain its momentum.
The cycle industry faced a major recession in 2024, with bike imports down and suppliers closing. This, coupled with rising costs, squeezed the business's margins. In 2024, despite a turnover of £1.38m, the company incurred an accumulated loss of £85,000. The business ultimately entered liquidation, unable to sustain operations under these conditions.
Beeline Bicycles is not the only bike shop to face challenges in recent times. In 2025, iconic south London bike shop Brixton Cycles also closed due to rising costs and a tough economic climate. Meanwhile, a popular bike shop in York closed after 45 years, citing inability to compete with online retailers. The liquidation of Beeline Bicycles serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by independent retailers in the cycling industry.
