ICE's continuous operation receives official approval; Deutsche Bahn announces a mid-December start for its deployment - ICE without stairs receives green light - DB reveals plans for mid-December launch
Deutsche Bahn (DB), the German railway company, is preparing to introduce a modern update to its InterCity Express (ICE) train fleet. The new ICE trains, known as the ICE L, are set to begin service on long-distance routes from mid-December 2025, with the routes between Berlin and Cologne being the first to receive these innovative trains.
The ICE L trains have faced some initial delays in delivery from manufacturer Talgo and in testing and certification procedures. However, after overcoming these hurdles, they are now fully certified for German operation as of mid-2025.
These trains are designed to offer a versatile and comfortable travel experience. They are equipped with dual-mode Siemens Vectron locomotives, capable of operating on both electrified and non-electrified lines. With a top speed of approximately 160 km/h, these locomotives will be instrumental in expanding service coverage to non-electrified destinations.
The ICE L trains also prioritise accessibility. They meet newer standards, ensuring step-free entry with a uniform height of 76 cm across sets, as mandated by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Deutsche Bahn. Each seat will feature a generously sized folding table, and a tablet or mobile phone holder for added convenience.
The interior of the new ICE trains will boast a homely feel, with the use of high-quality materials. Furthermore, the trains will incorporate time-of-day-dependent lighting control, enhancing the overall comfort of passengers.
The public presentation of the new ICE trains is scheduled for October 17, following the initial delays. The deployment of the new trains will commence gradually from mid-December, marking a significant step forward in modernizing Germany's rail system.

The widespread anticipation among the community for the introduction of Deutsche Bahn's (DB) modern ICE L trains is growing, as they prepare to revitalize the German railway industry. These trains, equipped with advanced features in finance, transportation, and automotive technology, will not only improve service coverage to non-electrified destinations but also prioritize accessibility and comfort to enhance the travel experience.
As the first of these innovative trains begin service on long-distance routes between Berlin and Cologne in mid-December 2025, the community will witness the significant step forward in modernizing Germany's rail system, thereby bolstering the country's reputation as a global leader in industry and transportation.
