Hessian Water Protection Police Celebrates 75 Years of Safeguarding Waterways

The Hessian Water Protection Police, established on September 4, 1945, by US occupation authorities, celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2025. Initially created as the first of its kind in the American occupation zone, it has since grown into its own directorate within the Hessian Police Headquarters.

The unit, now comprising around 130 highly trained officers, plays a crucial role in maintaining safety on Hesse's waterways. They oversee over 525 kilometers of navigable rivers and lakes, ensuring the smooth operation of professional shipping and enforcing regulations. Annually, they inspect over 2,100 commercial ships and more than 2,000 sports boats.

In addition to their regular duties, the Water Protection Police has taken on significant tasks during major events. In 2024, they secured the waterfront fan area on the Main during the UEFA European Football Championship. They also monitor leisure boating, including alcohol controls, to ensure the safety of all water users.

As the Hessian Water Protection Police approaches its 75th anniversary, it reflects on a history of dedicated service and looks forward to continuing its vital role in maintaining safety and order on Hesse's waterways. From its humble beginnings under US occupation, it has grown into a highly respected and professional force.
