The daily grind of being a care worker takes its toll, according to data from Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Care professionals in the northeast missed an average of 32.6 days due to sickness last year, a significantly higher rate than the national average of 28.5 days.

"The illness rates among care workers remain alarmingly high compared to other professions," explains TK regional manager Manon Austenat-Wied. According to the health insurance company's data, the average absence rate for all occupations in 2023 was 24.6 days.

Why's it so tough on care workers?

"A typical day in their line of work is grueling, often at the cost of their own health," Austenat-Wied points out. She calls on care providers to foster a healthier, more supportive work environment. "Care workers are valuable and irreplaceable in our rapidly aging society," emphasizes TK's top honcho while highlighting existing health promotional programs.

The findings were based on sickness records of 103,000 TK policyholders in the northeast, making it one of the largest statutory health insurers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Care shortage is real

More than 120,000 people in the state need care, a number that keeps growing. The "Pact for Care" initiative launched in autumn 2023 aims to retain skilled workers and ensure care services in rural areas. In the past, care facilities have had to shut down due to staff shortages.
