Grid Expansion Tenders Proposed by Mew for Enhanced Electrical Capacity and Project Development
In a significant stride towards modernising its national electricity system, the Kuwait Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) has unveiled an extensive plan focused on enhancing infrastructure, expanding capacity, and promoting sustainability.
At the heart of this ambitious project are several key initiatives. One such initiative involves the extension of 11-kilovolt underground cables, aimed at upgrading the distribution network to improve reliability, reduce outages, and align with Kuwait's urban planning goals recently approved by the Municipal Council.
Another essential aspect of the plan is the upgrading of infrastructure to boost the grid's capacity to handle peak loads and support major development projects across the country. This includes modernising substations, expanding transmission capacity, and incorporating advanced control systems.
The Ministry has also opened opportunities for oil companies to build solar power plants, a policy shift that supports Kuwait’s national objectives to diversify its energy mix and increase the share of renewable energy, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
All work is being carried out in line with the highest technical and environmental standards, ensuring that the modernisation efforts align with Kuwait's broader commitment to sustainable development.
These initiatives form part of a series of strategic projects aligned with Kuwait's vision to modernise its national electricity system. The project details were recently reported by Al-Jarida daily.
In addition, the MEW has floated three tenders for the extension of 11-kilovolt underground cables. The project also includes upgrading existing infrastructure, building new transformer stations, expanding distribution lines, installing transformers, and implementing advanced control and monitoring systems.
Today, the electricity load index dropped to 14,038 megawatts during peak hours, a testament to the project's success in stabilising the grid and relieving pressure on the system. Consumers are encouraged to continue reducing energy consumption during peak hours between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to maintain grid stability and support national sustainability efforts.
The ultimate goal of this comprehensive plan is to meet growing electricity demand in Kuwait, enhance supply reliability, and reduce outages, all while promoting sustainability and attracting investment. These efforts underscore Kuwait’s commitment to a modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible energy system that can meet future demands effectively.
- To further promote sustainability, the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) is collaborating with oil companies to build solar power plants, a move that aligns with Kuwait’s vision to diversify its energy mix, increase the share of renewable energy, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
- As part of the plan, the MEW has initiated several strategic projects aimed at upgrading and expanding the grid's infrastructure, including modernizing substations, expanding transmission capacity, and incorporating advanced control systems, all designed to handle peak loads and support major development projects in the country.
