Governors Beshear and DeWine reveal design for companion bridge in the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor project

The Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project is set to revolutionize a crucial economic corridor and serve as a game-changer for commuting families in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The project's centrepiece, a new companion bridge, has been unveiled as a cable-stayed independent deck bridge [1][2][3].

This innovative design choice offers several advantages. Both decks of the bi-level bridge will be supported by cables rather than the traditional steel truss. The top deck will carry northbound traffic into Ohio, providing unobstructed views of the Cincinnati skyline [1]. Unlike other double-deck bridges, the two decks will not be connected by steelwork, making it a more cost-effective and easier-to-build solution [1][2].

The existing Brent Spence Bridge will be reconfigured to three lanes on each deck with emergency shoulders [4]. The project includes improvements to the existing bridge, redesigned ramp configurations, new pedestrian and bike paths, and aesthetic improvements [5].

The new bridge and corridor improvements aim to address one of the country's most severe traffic bottlenecks and create new opportunities for regional economic growth and community connectivity [6]. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has concurred with the selected bridge type [7].

The design underwent extensive technical review and wind testing [8]. The new bridge will carry traffic on I-71 and I-75 [9]. Northbound drivers will use the top level, giving them unobstructed views of the Cincinnati skyline and the bridge's unique design [1].

The new bridge design is part of one of the nation's most significant transportation investments, aimed at improving safety and strengthening economic development opportunities [10]. It reflects the values of the communities it connects - practical, forward-looking, and built to last [11].
