Government provides financial assistance, up to €1683, for acquiring both a gas and an electric stove.
Portugal's E-Lar Program: A New Initiative to Promote Energy Efficiency
The Portuguese Government has launched a new program called E-Lar, aimed at encouraging citizens to switch from gas appliances to more energy-efficient electric ones. This program, which is part of a broader government plan budgeted with approximately €40 million, is designed to reduce energy poverty and promote sustainable energy use in residential buildings across Portugal.
Gustavo Carvalho, a journalist and the host of the "Economia dia a dia" podcast, has covered the E-Lar program in his work. The details on how to apply for the E-Lar program can be found in the new episode of this podcast, produced by Expresso.
Interested individuals can start their application process on September 30, 2025. To be eligible, applicants must have a valid residency document. They can visit the official Fundo Ambiental website, www.fundoambiental.pt, to fill out the online application form.
Once the application is approved, applicants receive a voucher that can be used to purchase electric appliances (cookers, ovens, water heaters) rated energy class A or higher from authorized suppliers. The voucher covers up to €1,683 for families entitled to the social energy tariff (vulnerable households) and up to €1,100 for others with no electricity contract restrictions. The voucher is valid for 60 days.
It's worth noting that new suppliers' applications opened on August 18, 2025, but individuals applying for vouchers must wait until September 30, 2025. Additionally, applications can also be retrospective for eligible works carried out since February 20, 2020, if proper invoices and receipts are provided.
Replacing gas appliances with electric ones not only contributes to decarbonization but also requires the suppliers to collect and recycle the replaced gas appliances. This initiative is a significant step towards a more sustainable future for Portugal's housing sector.
To participate, prepare to:
- Verify eligibility (such as having a valid residency document).
- Visit www.fundoambiental.pt from September 30, 2025.
- Complete the online application form.
- Await voucher approval and then redeem it at authorized suppliers.
