Germany Clarifies Taxi Rules: Guide Dogs Mandatory, Other Pets Must Be Secured

In Germany, taxi regulations regarding dogs have been clarified. Guide and assistance dogs must be allowed in taxis, refusal being considered discrimination. However, other pets may have specific rules and requirements.

Under normal circumstances, taking dogs in taxis isn't mandatory and varies by municipality. For safety, dogs must not sit in the passenger seat or sprawl across the back seat. Not all vehicles or drivers can accommodate large dogs, and extra cleaning fees may apply.

Assistance dogs are considered part of the taxi, but other four-legged animals should be registered, secured, and cause no disturbance. Passengers must declare their dog during reservation, specifying the breed. In taxis, dogs are legally considered cargo and must be secured safely. In case of an accident, both the owner and driver can be held accountable if the dog isn't secured. Drivers must quickly decide whether to accept a ride with a dog, balancing safety and customer service.

German taxi regulations now clearly state that guide and assistance dogs must be allowed in taxis. Other pets may have specific rules, and all dogs must be secured safely to ensure passenger and animal safety.
