Gaza Humanitarian Foundation Controversially Hires Frenchman, Sébastien Cazenave, as Logistics Head

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), notorious for its contentious history, recently scored a high-profile French addition. On June 23, Sébastien Cazenave, a seasoned international humanitarian, was announced as the director of GHF's supply chain operation, tasked with enhancing aid delivery to Gazans.

Established in the crux of the tense Israeli-Palestinian conflict, GHF, backed by the U.S. and Israel, emerged as a humanitarian lifeline for Gaza's population, battling against severe shortages caused by the prolonged Israel blockade and bombardment resulting from the October 2023 Hamas attacks.

GHF's journey has been riddled with controversy, stemming from accusations of compromising core humanitarian principles such as neutrality, impartiality, and independence. Critics, including major aid organizations and the United Nations, claim that the foundation's involvement of armed American contractors and coordination with Israeli military forces undermines its neutral status.

The foundation's inaugural executive director, Jake Wood, resigned in late May 2025, underscoring the difficulties in squaring the foundation's objectives with upholding humanitarian principles. Concerns swirled around Israel's alleged strategic use of aid distribution to concentrate Gaza's population, contributing to populace movement, and depopulation efforts. Moreover, the safety and fairness of aid distribution came under scrutiny, with reports of chaotic scenes, injuries, and fatalities surfacing at aid centers.

It is noteworthy that the recent appointment of Sébastien Cazenave has not been publicly confirmed, although other key leadership changes, such as the resignation of Jake Wood, the interim appointment of John Acree, and the elevation of Johnnie Moore Jr. as Executive Chairman, have been documented.

Despite persistent doubts, the U.S. government has maintained its support for GHF through substantial funding, advocating this policy as part of an overarching regional peace strategy heading by President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. However, many aid groups and the UN have steadfastly refused cooperation due to ethical concerns surrounding the foundation's operations.

The appointment of Sébastien Cazenave, a seasoned international humanitarian, as the director of GHF's supply chain operation hints at a potential shift in the foundation's business and finance strategies, hoping to address controversies in the politics and general news sectors. Despite the addition of prominent figures like Cazenave, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation continues to face criticism for its history of compromising humanitarian principles, prompting concerns about the future of aid delivery in Gaza.
