Frustrated SNCF Workers Plan Major Strikes
Get ready for some rail pandemonium! Controllers at France's national rail company, SNCF, are set to stage a trio of strikes from May 5 to 11, following a call from the Sud-Rail union. Drivers will kick off the action from May 7. The CGT-Cheminots, SNCF's largest union, has urged workers to mobilize starting May 5.
What's the beef? These hardworking souls are none too happy about the implementation of new scheduling software. According to Sud Rail, this system constantly alters staff schedules without warning, causing headaches for employees.
SNCF, ever the diplomatic bunch, has promised to provide six months' notice for rest days. However, unions are pushing for more transparency regarding day-to-day working schedules.
Not only are wages becoming a bone of contention, but foreign doctors in France have taken to a hunger strike over job insecurity too. The union argues that the offered wage increases, averaging 2.2% for 2025, are paltry. SNCF, conversely, claims they've upheld their end of the bargain in recent negotiations.
The controllers are specifically demanding a €100 monthly increase in the work bonus and its guarantee.
Historically, industrial action at SNCF has wrought havoc during school holidays. In February last year, a strike during a holiday weekend left 150,000 holidaymakers stranded. A Christmas strike in December 2022 disrupted travel for some 200,000 people.
Competition Rears Its Head
With SNCF on the ropes, ticket cancellations for May 8 have shot up 50% above average, according to booking platform Kombo. Fearing train cancellations, many passengers have turned to alternative transport choices, such as carpooling and buses.
Italian rail operator Trenitalia is cashing in, seeing a 20% spike in ticket sales for May 8. Competing with SNCF on the Paris-Lyon route, it's now reaping the benefits of the chaos.
