Former Current Talent Head Sues for Discrimination

Former head of talent at Current, Isabelle Mitura, has filed a lawsuit against the neobank, alleging sex, race, and age discrimination. Mitura, who is of Asian descent, claims she faced a hostile work environment and was terminated after taking medical leave for breast cancer.

Mitura's lawsuit details several instances of discrimination. She documented a pay gap where a female senior director was paid less than a male counterpart with the same title and performance. Additionally, Alex Sergiyenko, head of people at Current, allegedly demeaned Mitura in front of colleagues, using derogatory language based on her age and race. Mitura also claims that Current's July layoffs disproportionately affected women and people of color.

Mitura's troubles began when she took medical leave for breast cancer. Despite being scheduled to return, she was terminated two weeks before her expected comeback. Sergiyenko admitted that Mitura's replacements had built relationships within the company during her leave. Mitura faced further pushback from leadership when she attempted to introduce diversity, equality, and inclusion initiatives. CEO Stuart Sopp is also named in the lawsuit, with Mitura accusing him of expressing frustration about interviewing too many Indians for a chief risk officer position and praising the British Empire in front of employees.

Current, valued at $2.2 billion in 2021 after securing $220 million in funding, is now facing serious allegations of discrimination. Mitura's lawsuit, if proven, could have significant implications for the neobank's reputation and operations. Current has not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
