Ford F-150 Lightning Tops Tesla Cybertruck in Electric Pickup Sales

In a surprising turn of events, the Ford F-150 Lightning has dethroned the Tesla Cybertruck as the best-selling electric pickup truck in the United States. This shift in momentum within the electric pickup segment was primarily due to more attractive pricing and financial terms, making the Lightning more accessible to buyers compared to the Cybertruck's higher cost and costly leasing options.

Sales data confirm this trend. In the first quarter of 2025, 7,913 Ford F-150 Lightnings were registered, compared to 7,126 Cybertrucks. The gap widened in March, with Ford registering 2,598 F-150 Lightnings compared to Tesla's 2,170 Cybertrucks. This translates to a 787-unit advantage for Ford in electric pickup truck sales for the first quarter of 2025.

The Cybertruck's struggle in the electric pickup market can be attributed to its high price and expensive leasing payments. Initial lease costs for the Cybertruck are around $7,500 plus $893 monthly, with a large due-at-signing amount nearing $11,000. In contrast, the Ford F-150 Lightning is the cheapest electric truck on the market, with a starting price around $54,780 across multiple trims.

The Cybertruck's base model now starts at $69,990 USD, significantly higher than the initially announced $39,900 USD. This price increase, coupled with the Cybertruck's controversial design and Tesla's inventory overstock, may have deterred buyers.

Meanwhile, the Ford F-150 Lightning offers a familiar feel to loyal F-150 owners while still providing the benefits of electric power, such as instant torque and lower running costs. Ford's strategy with the F-150 Lightning was to electrify a proven best-seller rather than reinvent the pickup segment. This mainstream appeal, combined with its competitive pricing, has contributed to the Lightning's success.

While the Tesla Cybertruck's sales have declined sharply in 2025, with around 4,306 units sold in Q2, falling behind the Lightning and even the GMC Hummer EV, Ford's sales also dropped compared to previous years. However, the Lightning still maintained a lead, benefiting from its well-established brand.

It's worth noting that CEO Elon Musk's recent move into politics has caused backlash, specifically for the Cybertruck and its owners. However, the impact of this on sales is not clear.

In conclusion, the Ford F-150 Lightning's success can be attributed to its competitive pricing, familiar design, and broader dealer availability. The Cybertruck, on the other hand, may need to reconsider its pricing strategy and address concerns about its controversial design and inventory overstock to regain its position in the electric pickup market.
