Federal Grant Secured for Emerging Innovation Center - Federal Government funds innovative start-up hub, Future, with significant sum of money
The Rhine-Main region, centred around Frankfurt and Darmstadt, is witnessing a surge in its startup ecosystem, thanks to initiatives like Futury (The Future Factory). This innovation and startup accelerator, led by Melissa Ott since 2022, plays a pivotal role in the Rhine-Main technology ecosystem, promoting deep tech and science-based startups.
Futury's mission is to foster an entrepreneurial spirit within universities and support talents and start-ups in collaboration with the economy and industry. The startup factory, based in Frankfurt, has received millions in federal funding and is backed by an alliance of 26 companies, three foundations, four universities, and the ministers-presidents of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse.
One of Futury's key objectives is to create 1,000 new start-ups in the Rhine-Main area by 2030. To achieve this goal, the organisation provides support in financing, product development, and market access. Recently, Futury raised 10 million euros in private capital, which will be augmented to a total of 20 million euros with federal funds.
The Rhine-Main region, despite having a minor role in start-ups compared to other federal states, stands out in terms of start-ups per 100,000 inhabitants, with Darmstadt ranking among the leading cities in Germany. This regional focus on deep tech and green tech start-ups underscores its competitiveness in innovation-driven entrepreneurship.
In comparison to other leading German regions, the Rhine-Main area shows a different profile. While regions like Munich (Bavaria) and Berlin lead in startup density and founding activity, the Rhine-Main ecosystem's strength lies in its innovation depth and integration with research institutions.
Futury's impact extends beyond the Rhine-Main area, as it aims to support entrepreneurship across Germany. The organisation's patronage by the ministers-presidents of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse is a testament to its cross-border significance. Alexander Schweitzer, Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate, stated that Futury is creating a hub connecting science, industry, investors, and politics. Boris Rhein, Hesse's head of government, congratulated Futury for demonstrating how academic knowledge and economic realization can go hand in hand.
The four universities supporting Futury include the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, Goethe University Frankfurt, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and TU Darmstadt. These institutions complement Futury's efforts by offering extensive support, such as consulting, coaching, labs, networking, and funding, to spin research into marketable products and sustainable companies.
