Modernization of Kazakhstan's Border Checkpoints Boosts Capacity and Efficiency

The modernization of border checkpoints in Kazakhstan, particularly at "Qorda" (Kordai) and "Qarasu" (Karasu), is progressing at a rapid pace as part of a strategic initiative to enhance transport and logistics efficiency.

Repairs have been completed at two automobile border checkpoints, and reconstruction is underway at several others, including those on the Kazakh-Russian border. The modernization program aims to accelerate border crossing procedures by integrating digital technologies while improving infrastructure quality and speed.

At Kordai, the number of lanes has been increased from 4 to 8, and the number of passport control booths has doubled to 40. As a result, passenger throughput has increased fourfold, and automobile traffic has risen by 2.7 times[1][2]. At Karasu, the goal is to raise vehicle throughput from 700 to over 2,000 vehicles per day[1][2].

The modernization of these checkpoints is part of a broader program that includes 10 checkpoints and focuses on streamlining border crossings, improving infrastructure, and meeting modern requirements[1][2]. The Prime Minister, Olzhas Bektenov, has emphasized the importance of these border checkpoints for transborder cooperation and international transport communication[1].

Kazakhstan is also developing an Industrial Trade-Logistics Complex (ITLC) near these border areas. This complex will serve as a hub for warehousing, processing, aggregation, and sales within the Western Europe - Western China corridor, further bolstering the country's logistics sector[1].

The modernization incorporates automated scanning systems, weight control, and pre-declaration tools to ensure faster and more transparent crossings[3]. Although some delays were criticized by the Prime Minister earlier in August 2025, progress appears to be advancing rapidly as of mid-August 2025, with strong government oversight and directives in place to ensure timely completion[4].

The Prime Minister, Olzhas Bektenov, has personally inspected the progress of implementing modernization at the border checkpoints. He has instructed to ensure high-quality and timely repair work at the "Qarasu" checkpoint, and the reconstruction of border facilities is under the Head of State's control[5].

With 39 automobile border checkpoints on the border with EAEU countries, these developments contribute to Kazakhstan’s broader strategic transport sector upgrades, including a parallel modernization and digital transformation of the railway infrastructure to solidify the country's role as a global transit hub[5].

In summary, the ongoing modernization of the Qorda and Qarasu border checkpoints has significantly increased their capacity and throughput, is incorporating advanced digital technologies, and is designed to support the growth of Kazakhstan’s transport and logistics industry by facilitating smoother, faster, and higher-volume international trade flows[1][2][3].
