Get ready, folks! A potential trade war between the US and China could spell trouble for German manufacturing jobs, as per a study by credit insurer Allianz Trade. If there's no resolution in the tariff dispute, Chinese exporters are likely to divert to European markets, notably Germany, to dodge additional costs.
Jasmin Groeschl, Allianz Trade's economist, explained the possible repercussions. "With Chinese goods and increased competition on the rise, we project that 17,000 to 25,000 industrial jobs could be sacrificed in Germany," he said. Sectors at greatest risk include mechanical engineering, textiles, household goods, non-metallic mineral products, electronics, computers, and motor vehicles.
This potential job loss would predominantly affect the manufacturing sector and regions in southern Germany — think Upper Franconia, Tubingen, and Freiburg. The machinery and equipment sector alone could see 13,000 to 19,000 jobs go, while the non-metallic mineral products sector faces a potential loss of 1,200 to 1,800 jobs. The textile industry might lose around 2,200 to 3,300 jobs.
So, what's the deal here? US tariffs on Chinese products (reaching as high as 145% on certain items) are pushing Chinese exporters to target Europe and Germany as alternative markets. This shift increases competition for German manufacturers, who now face a rise in Chinese goods competing with local products. Allianz Trade estimates that approximately 14% of relocated Chinese exports (amounting to around $33 billion or €29.3 billion) could flow into Germany over the next three years due to the ongoing trade war.
The German economy has already experienced a contraction in the last two years (2023-2024) due to weak global demand and other factors such as the energy crisis. Additionally, one-third of German firms are considering layoffs in 2025, with the manufacturing sector feeling particularly grim. The trade war is contributing to a pessimistic economic outlook for Germany in 2025, with concerns about a potential recession looming due to these trade conflicts.

- The community policy should address the potential impact of trade wars, such as the US-China tariff dispute, on local employment within the manufacturing sector.
- Employment policies must be flexible to adapt to increased competition from Chinese exporters, particularly in industries like mechanical engineering, textiles, household goods, non-metallic mineral products, electronics, computers, and motor vehicles.
- The tariff dispute between the US and China may necessitate a revised employment policy to alleviate the expected unemployment in regions like Upper Franconia, Tubingen, and Freiburg.
- Financial policies should consider the warning signs of a potential recession due to the ongoing trade war, especially in the manufacturing sector, and implement measures to support affected industries and regions.
