Dow Chemical Company Shuts Down Operations in Germany

### Dow's Plant Closures in Germany: A Closer Look

Dow Chemical, one of the world's leading chemical companies, has announced plans to close several facilities in Germany by the end of 2027. The decision comes as a response to the challenging market conditions in Europe, with high energy and operating costs, fluctuating demand, and weak demand in key industries.

The affected plants include the chlor-alkali and vinyl assets in Schkopau, the so-called steam cracker in Böhlen, and a plant for basic siloxanes in Barry, Wales. These plants are particularly cost and energy-intensive, being at the beginning of the chemical value chain. In contrast, Dow's additional plants in Schkopau, Leuna, and Böhlen for the production of plastic and materials for the construction industry remain operational.

The closure of these plants is intended to adapt capacities, reduce trade risks, and improve competitiveness, according to Dow. The affected facilities produce chemical raw materials from crude oil, unlike the plants in Schkopau, Leuna, and Böhlen, which do not produce raw materials in this manner.

The closures will impact approximately 550 employees in Germany, with an additional 250 roles affected in the UK. Dow is also eliminating 1,500 global positions as part of a $1 billion cost savings initiative announced earlier.

The plants in Böhlen and Schkopau are producing chemical raw materials from crude oil, which is a significant contributor to their high energy and operating costs. The closure of these plants is expected to gradually increase operating profits from 2026.

Dow, however, remains committed to its operations in Germany and other parts of Europe, focusing on strategic assets and products. The company employs approximately 3,400 staff at 13 sites in Germany. The closures aim to right-size capacity and reduce exposure to higher-cost operations in Europe, helping Dow optimize margins and supply profitable derivative demand more effectively.

The closures will have a ripple effect on local economies and employment in the regions where the plants are located. However, Dow will continue to operate other facilities in these areas, focusing on plastics and construction materials. The company has informed employees at the affected sites about the plant closures.

In conclusion, Dow's decision to close several facilities in Germany and the UK is a strategic move to adapt to the challenging market conditions in Europe and enhance profitability. Despite the closures, Dow remains committed to its operations in Germany and other parts of Europe.

  1. Dow's commitment to its operations in Germany and other parts of Europe extends beyond the closures, as they plan to implement a community policy that includes vocational training programs, aimed at improving the skillsets of local workforce in compatible industries such as finance and business, to foster long-term growth and employment opportunities.
  2. To ensure a smooth transition for affected employees, Dow is actively exploring potential financial support options for those interested in pursuing vocational training in different industries, ultimately helping them secure positions in local businesses that align with the company's strategic assets and products.
