Disruption Cripples North Baltic Canal: Consequences are Severe

The Kiel Canal, a vital artificial waterway in Germany, has been closed since Monday evening due to a strike by members of the trade union Verdi. The industrial action is aimed at pressuring wage negotiations in the public sector.

The closure is causing significant economic damage, estimated to be over 1.5 million euros per day. Approximately 70 to 80 ships are being delayed or rerouted each day, impacting over 3,000 jobs, including pilots, canal pilots, shipbrokers, and employees of ship suppliers.

One of the ships affected by the closure is the Maersk Line shipping company's containership "Laura Maersk." The vessel, which passed through the canal on Monday, has had to reroute, now travelling from Gothenburg via Skagen instead. The company's return journey from Fredericia to Bremerhaven has been cancelled due to the rerouting.

The strike, which is high enough to paralyse the canal with a small number of participants, has also affected the traffic control center in Brunsbüttel, where nautical officers monitor the canal. The traffic of these ships does not need traffic management, but the closure has made operations more challenging.

Klaus Peter Molter, chairman of the association of canal pilots, stated that the strike is causing significant financial losses for his members. He emphasised that the strike pay does not come close to making up for the losses they would have had in normal operation.

Jörg Brockmann, spokesperson for the Waterways and Shipping Office North-Ostsee-Kanal, stated that the traffic of these ships does not require traffic management. However, Jens-Broder Knudsen of the initiative Kiel Canal criticises that the strike is further damaging the image of the Kiel Canal in this difficult time.

Trade unionist Schischefsky has called on Verdi members at brokers and canal pilots to go on a solidarity strike for strike pay. The duration of the strike and the estimated financial impact per day on Germany's economy are yet to be determined. For accurate and up-to-date information on this topic, it would be best to consult recent news sources or official announcements from Verdi or relevant German economic authorities.

Despite ongoing expansion works, the closure of the Kiel Canal is also having environmental implications. Ships that are rerouted due to the closure are emitting more climate-damaging CO2. The corvette "Emden," which became known through a sabotage attempt, passed through the Kiel Canal on Tuesday night, leaving the Hamburg shipyard earlier than planned on Monday.

The Kiel Canal, which connects the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, is one of the busiest artificial waterways in the world. Its closure is causing widespread disruption and financial losses, with the hope that a resolution can be reached soon to reopen the canal and minimise the impact on Germany's economy and environment.

  1. The closure of the Kiel Canal, a significant economic waterway, is causing daily financial losses estimated to exceed 1.5 million euros due to the strike by Verdi members.
  2. The impact of the industrial action extends beyond the canal itself, as over 3,000 jobs are being affected, including those of pilots, shipbrokers, and employees of ship suppliers.
  3. The Maersk Line shipping company's containership "Laura Maersk" is one of the vessels delayed by the strike, leading to the cancellation of its return journey from Fredericia to Bremerhaven.
  4. The strike has also affected the traffic control center in Brunsbüttel and is further damaging the image of the Kiel Canal, as highlighted by Jens-Broder Knudsen of the initiative Kiel Canal.
