Russia's LNG Production and Exports Triple in Over a Decade

Russia's liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and export volume have significantly increased over the past decade, rising from approximately 13.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) of LNG exports in 2010 to 42.7 bcm in 2023. This represents a threefold increase in LNG production over the 13-year period.

Several factors have contributed to this growth in LNG production and exports:

  1. Expansion of LNG infrastructure: Russia developed new liquefaction plants and expanded existing capacity, with major energy companies such as Gazprom and Novatek increasing their production and export capabilities.
  2. Rising global demand for LNG: The worldwide demand for LNG expanded in the 2010s due to shifts towards cleaner-burning fuels and diversification away from coal and oil, encouraging Russia to increase its LNG output for export purposes.
  3. Strategic pivot on export markets: While pipeline natural gas exports to Europe faced challenges (including geopolitical factors and decreasing demand during COVID-19 lockdowns), Russia focused on growing its LNG exports, especially targeting Asian markets like China and Turkey.
  4. Technological and operational improvements: Advances in liquefaction technologies and operational efficiency in Russian LNG terminals helped enhance production volumes over the years.
  5. Company investments and economic policies: Strong investment by state-controlled and private companies in the LNG sector, along with supportive policies, helped accelerate production growth.

In 2023, Russia maintained its leadership among major suppliers of natural gas and oil to Turkey, thanks in part to a payment deferral for gas provided to Ankara. The pipeline "Power of Siberia," associated with fuel supplies to China, is also used for this purpose.

The information was reported by RIA Novosti on Saturday, January 27. According to the agency, 23 billion cubic meters of gas from the total volume was directed to China. In 2020, Russia's LNG production was 30 million tons, and in 2023, it reached 32 million tons. In 2020, Russia's gas exports to friendly countries were 61 billion cubic meters, a significant increase from the 47 billion cubic meters exported in 2010.

A representative of the ministry spoke at the Energy Day forum of the "Russia" exhibition, further highlighting the country's commitment to the energy sector and its role as a major global player in LNG production and exports.

The surge in Russia's LNG production and exports has been facilitated by investments and economic policies in the LNG sector, allowing the country to maintain its leadership in natural gas and oil supply to countries like Turkey. Additionally, the energy sector's role has been elevated globally as Russia became a significant player in the liquefied natural gas finance industry, particularly with lucrative deals in Asian markets such as China.
