Revamped and Modernized: A New Chapter for Middelgrunden's Wind Turbines

A breath of fresh air for the wind turbines at Middelgrounden offshore Copenhagen! According to an initial assessment commissioned by HOFOR, these turbines have at least three decades more to spin their blades, transforming wind into electricity.

The comprehensive examination conducted by R&D Engineering confirmed that the structural integrity of the towers and foundations has remained resilient after approximately two decades of operation. Peter Winther, Key Account Manager at R&D Engineering, elaborated, "We've inspected the turbines and analyzed the stand of all parts and components of the tower and foundations. The overall structure is in good shape following about 20 years of operation. With some minor adjustments and periodic checks, we estimate these foundations can survive for another 35 years, while the towers can withstand 30 more years, given updates to the moving parts like gearboxes and blades."

HOFOR is now geared up to perform necessary modifications to ensure the turbines at Middelgrunden continue to produce green energy post-2026, when the current operating license ends. However, they await the relevant authorities' approval to extend the operation period beyond 2026.

Jan Kauffmann, HOFOR's Finance and Business Director, emphasized the project's finances' reliance on an extended permit from the Danish Energy Agency. He said, "Obtaining permission for a prolonged operation, for instance, 5-10 years, will find it challenging to make the project's finances work."

Of the 20 turbines, HOFOR owns ten, while the remaining ten are owned by Middelgrundens Vindmøllelaugs (Middelgrunden Wind Turbine Cooperative). The 2 MW turbines at Middelgrunden, among Denmark's earliest installed in the waters, are nearing the end of their lifespan.

The project is backed financially by the Danish Energy Agency through the EUDP's Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program. As a pilot, one of HOFOR's wind turbines will undergo the restoration and recycling process. If successful, the method will be applied to HOFOR's other nine turbines, and potentially the wind turbines owned by the cooperative. HOFOR expects to initiate enhancing these turbines' lifespan during the following year.

In a broader context, Denmark's intention is to prolong the operational life of older offshore wind farms responsibly, contributing to their green transition. With an extension of 25 years, the Middelgrounden turbines will continue to be a vital part of Copenhagen's renewable energy landscape.
