The Strait of Messina Bridge is an impressive feat of engineering, with a planned length of approximately 3.3 to 3.6 km (3,300 to 3,600 meters). This will surpass Turkey's Canakkale Bridge, making it the longest bridge once constructed, with a difference of 1,277 metres.
The bridge will accommodate both road and rail transport, integrating into the Berlin–Palermo railway axis of the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T), aiming to significantly improve connectivity between Sicily and the mainland. It is designed to reduce the travel time across the strait by ferry from up to 100 minutes to 10 minutes by car and carry 6,000 cars per hour and 200 trains per day.
