Starting from May 16th, these tunnels (Coschütz, Dölzschen, and Altfranken) will be shutting down for nearly two weeks for some much-needed repairs. Don't worry; we've got your back with a comprehensive guide on alternative routes.
Here's what you need to know:
- The Repair Work: Fire alarm systems will be upgraded, and routine maintenance will be carried out, as announced by the Federal Highway Company. Tunnel closures will take place intermittently.
- Friday, May 16th, from 10 PM to Sunday, May 18th, at 8 PM
- Weekend of May 23rd to 25th, for the same duration
- During the week, from May 19th to 23rd, the tunnels will be closed from 8 PM to 5 AM each day
- Avoiding Congestion: To ensure smooth traffic flow during the closures, alternative routes have been designated:
For Freight Traffic and Buses: - Towards the Czech Republic: Petrovice → Tisá → Libouchec → Rejoin at Telnice slip road (km 80) - In the opposite direction: Exit Telnice slip road → Varvažov → Telnice → Nákleřov → Rejoin Petrovice - Enforcement by police will be increased to ensure compliance, and oversized vehicles will be redirected to alternative routes.
For Passenger Cars: - A shorter bidirectional detour via Nákleřov and Telnice is available. This scenic route includes the traditional U Johnů inn in Nákleřov.
- Trucks and Buses: Be mindful of police enforcement and heed the specified detour routes to avoid penalties and ensure safety.
- Speed Limit in the Tunnels: Despite the closures, the speed limit in the tunnels remains at 60 km/h due to ongoing construction work.
Stay safe, folks! The ride might be a tad longer, but remember: patience is a virtue. And who knows? You might even stumble upon a hidden gem along the detour. Happy journeys!

- In light of the upcoming construction on the A17 motorway tunnels near Dresden (Coschütz, Dölzschen, and Altfranken), the Community may find it beneficial to familiarize themselves with the new vocational training opportunities in the automotive industry and public-transit sectors as a proactive approach to potential job market changes due to the construction finance.
- As a more eco-friendly alternative to automotive transportation during the tunnel closures, commuters could consider utilizing the public-transit system for their travels, which might help reduce congestion on the alternative routes.
- To support those impacted by the closure and seeking to transition their skills, the Community could advocate for a community policy that includes vocational training programs in vocational training sectors such as automotive repair or transportation services to help mitigate the disruption caused by the repairs on the motorway tunnels.
