Construction of A8 highway bypass commences from fall 2027 - Construction of the new A8 elevation is scheduled to commence in autumn 2027
The Autobahn A8 Albaufstieg, a crucial stretch connecting the cities of Stuttgart and Munich, is set to undergo a significant transformation. The new route, which will be around 3.8 kilometers shorter than the current one, will be built between Muellhausen im Tale and Hohenstadt in the district of Goeppingen.
The construction, aimed at eliminating a traffic bottleneck between Stuttgart and Munich, is scheduled to commence in autumn 2027 following a two-year preparation period. The Autobahn GmbH Niederlassung Suedwest, the company managing the project, has initiated preparations for this construction.
The cost of the A8 Albaufstieg construction is expected to be around 900 million euros. The plan approval for the new route was issued in the Stuttgart government presidency in mid-December. The new route will be a six-lane A8 Albaufstieg, half as steep as the current one.
During the construction phase, traffic disruptions and delays are expected due to frequent lane closures and speed restrictions. However, the benefits of the upgraded route are anticipated to outweigh these inconveniences. The planners expect more traffic safety, fewer traffic jams, less noise, and fewer emissions from the new route.
Once completed, the new A8 Albaufstieg is expected to significantly improve traffic flow between Stuttgart and Munich, reducing travel times by approximately 10-15 minutes. The investment is justified by the importance of the route for national and trans-European traffic.
Around 15,000 households near the section will be informed in writing about the construction. The current Albaufstieg and -abstieg will be transformed into a national cycle route and a country road, respectively, contributing to improved regional mobility and sustainable transportation options.
In summary, the A8 Albaufstieg construction is a major motorway infrastructure project in Baden-Württemberg, aimed at reducing congestion between Stuttgart and Munich, while improving safety, reducing emissions, and enhancing the overall driving experience for millions of commuters and holiday travellers each year.
The Community policy could include provisions for financing the A8 Albaufstieg construction, ensuring the project's success within the given budget. Following the project's completion, vocational training programs could be established in the automotive industry, providing opportunities for local residents to acquire skills required for roles in the transportation sector.
