China and Central Asian nations ink agreement, sketch out fresh avenues for collaboration

Central Asia's second summit with China wrapped up on June 17, sealing the Treaty on Eternal Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation. The agreement serves as a major leap forward in bolstering trust and strategic cooperation among the five Central Asian nations and China.

With the summit paving the way, relationships between these six countries are expected to reach new heights. The event also redefined strategies for enhancing comprehensive collaboration, including fortifying trade, strengthening ancient bonds, adopting a biennial theme initiative, increasing sister city connections, and strengthening international collaboration.
Ever since the first China-Central Asia summit in Xi'an in 2023, trade between China and Central Asian countries has skyrocketed, reaching a whopping 35% increase and nearly $100 billion in 20XX. Over 10,000 joint ventures and projects underscore the deepening economic connections across the region.
Welcoming the leaders to Astana, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proclaimed that Central Asia and China have established an unbreakable level of strategic partnership.

Chinese President Xi Jinping made an appearance during the high-level talks, announcing that China would extend a 1.5 billion yuan (US$208 million) grant to aid key projects that would boost public welfare and support the regional development goals of the five Central Asian nations.
"China and Central Asian countries have connected and formed the China-Central Asia spirit – a spirit of mutual respect, trust, mutual benefits, cooperation, and shared aspirations for modernization to achieve high-quality development," said Xi.
The future of the region's security was given top priority.
"China is ready to support Central Asian countries in fortifying law enforcement and security, combating terrorism and organized crime, improving cybersecurity, and promoting a greater Central Asian role in international affairs," Xi added.

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov presented six key areas to deepen the strategic partnership with China: transport and transit connectivity, energy, finance and e-commerce, education and science, tourism, and security.
The progress of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project, a vital element of the Belt and Road Initiative, was highlighted as a major priority for combating transport challenges and strengthening economic and cultural integration. An initiative to develop tourist routes along the ancient Silk Road was also proposed.

Economic cooperation is a crucial element of the close relationship between Central Asian countries and China, according to Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon.
In his address, President Rahmon emphasized the need to expand cooperation in areas such as energy, industry, transport, communications, and agriculture. He also advocated for preserving Tajikistan's glaciers, highlighting Tajikistan's initiative to host a High-Level International Conference on Glaciers Preservation in May.

Turkmenistan's President Serdar Berdimuhamedov pointed out the growing significance of the Central Asian region in international geopolitics. He expressed his encouragement for Turkmenistan's proposal for the development of a global security strategy, focusing on preventive diplomacy as a means of neutralizing conflicts and utilizing neutrality to mediate disputes peacefully.

Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev underlined his support for the summit's agenda and documents, which included the Astana Declaration.
"I welcome the launch of joint centers for desertification prevention and cooperation in education, poverty reduction, and the Central Asia-China Uninterrupted Trade Platform. The platforms [will] contribute to expanding practical cooperation between our countries," said Mirziyoyev.
He believed that amid rising global tensions, regional mechanisms would become increasingly important in uniting countries and promoting a more stable international order. According to him, the treaty serves as a historic event that sets the foundation for regional stability.
Uzbekistan plans to actively participate in the development and organization of these initiatives, emphasizing the importance of leveraging the potential of Central Asian states and China's industrial leadership to create a space teeming with opportunities, knowledge exchange, and technology transfer.
- The treaty may potentially lead to enhanced cooperation in the finance sector, as China has pledged to offer a substantial grant to fund key projects in Central Asia.
- With the focus on transport, transit connectivity, and energy, the region's infrastructure and economy might significantly grow, similar to the surge in trade witnessed since the first summit in Xi'an.
- The future of the region may see increased international collaboration in addressing issues such as war-and-conflicts, terrorism, organized crime, and cybersecurity, as emphasized by President Xi Jinping.
